A Case for a Quick Peace treaty with Israel

In order to assure our security, and enhance our economy,
the newly liberated Lebanon from 30 years of Syrian occupation will need to
embark on a series of reforms and bold actions that will require a peace treaty
with Israel for the following reasons:
- No Reason. There is no reason whatsoever to
maintain a state of conflict with our Israeli neighbors. We have no occupied
land and Israel is offering peace. It is also a fascinating culture with a
rich heritage. The Palestinians as well as many Arab nations have already
embarked on peace initiatives with Israel who have a peace treated with
Egypt and Jordan as well as go relations with Oman, Morocco, Tunisia, and
the Palestinian authority.
- Ideological Reason. We are neighbors. Our
people have been brainwashed for half a century. We owe it to our young
generation to discover our Israeli neighbors, with no complexes or
pre-programming. We need to break the shackles of indoctrination and like
the Brave late President Sadat of Egypt, open our hearts and minds to the
good people of Israel. Give Peace a chance.
- Alternate Trade Route. Historically Syria has
blocked our trade route with the Arab world. It may do so again. We need an
alternate route, and we have one. Going through Israel, then Jordan, we can
reach all other Arab nations. We do not need the route through Syria. They
will not be able to blackmail us!
- Dubai. Lebanon has lost 30 years of
development. Many other zones in the Middle East have surpassed us. Dubai is
today the internet, financial, Real Estate, even tourism capital of the
Middle East. We urgently need to catch up and recapture our role as a
leading provider of international services and as a gateway to the larger
Middle East. Our unemployed young generation depends on it.
- Trade. Advantageous US and EU Trade agreements.
Like Jordan, we may be able to obtain preferential trade agreements with the
US if part of our production has Israeli participation. This could pump
several hundred million dollars in our economy a year.
- Military security. A peace treaty with Israel
will bring us under US and NATO military security umbrella. We must become
Fortress Lebanon. We can purchase and equip high technology armed forces,
and defeat any future Syrian aggression against our homeland.
- Syria hegemony. I am disturbed when I hear our
leadership say we will be the last to sign a peace treaty with Israel. Why
should we give ugly Syria any brake? We should be motivated by the national
interest of the Lebanese people first and foremost, and before any other
consideration.
