Following reported ban of radical Muslim cleric,
B’nai Brith Canada
calls on Islamic Foundation of Toronto to rethink “dangerous agenda”
TORONTO, June 29, 2006 – B’nai Brith Canada has applauded the Government’s
reported decision to deny British Sheik Riyad Ul-Haq entry into Canada. The
Jewish human rights organization had formally written to the relevant
authorities to request that the Sheikh be banned from Canada on the grounds that
he incites racial hatred.
“The Government has once again demonstrated its resolve to fight hatred and
extremism by denying Sheik Ul-Haq a platform here in Canada to spread hate,”
said Frank Dimant, B’nai Brith Canada’s Executive Vice President. “Sheik Ul-Haq
has a long history of targeting Jewish, Christian, and Hindu minority
communities with his poisonous messaging. All Canadians, in particular
susceptible youth who were to have been the primary audience for the Sheik’s
scheduled address, will be spared his inflammatory messaging and attempts to
indoctrinate them into his world of hate.
“We commend the leaders from Canada’s diverse ethnic communities that have come
forward in recent days to denounce Sheik ul-Haq’s brand of hate, particularly at
this sensitive time of heightened tensions and elevated security concerns. We
call on the Islamic Foundation of Toronto, the organizers who held firm in their
invitation to the Sheik, to rethink their dangerous agenda of giving a forum to
hate mongers and extremists.”
